2 percent are completely unemployed in Norway – Dagsavisen

2 percent are completely unemployed in Norway – Dagsavisen

Adjusted for normal seasonal variations, there were 600 more who were registered as completely unemployed or jobseekers on measures in November, figures from Nav show.

– Unemployment has increased somewhat in the last month. In the past year, unemployment has increased across the country, and this is largely due to more Ukrainians registering as unemployed, says director of employment and welfare Hans Christian Holte.

Gross unemployment, i.e. the sum of fully unemployed and jobseekers on measures, consists of 58,900 fully unemployed (2.0 per cent of the workforce) and 16,800 jobseekers on measures (0.6 per cent of the workforce).

In addition, 22,700 people are partially unemployed (0.8 per cent of the workforce).

Thus, there are a total of 98,300 registered jobseekers with Nav at the end of November. This amounts to 3.3 per cent of the workforce.

Potential nest egg for the Norwegian economy

Chief economist Kyrre M. Knudsen at Sparebank 1 Sør-Norge takes a positive view of the development in the labor market. The figures are roughly in line with Norges Bank’s estimates.

– The slight increase is mainly due to the fact that more people from Ukraine are looking for work, and that is expected, he says.

The pressure may be in the process of easing in the economy, and we could potentially have a kinder egg for the Norwegian economy, Knudsen believes.

– We can reduce inflation and interest rates, we will maintain real wage growth, and unemployment will remain low. In that case, it will be a soft landing after a demanding period, he says.

Highest unemployment within tourism

During November, 16,200 new job seekers were registered. There are slightly more than in October, but at roughly the same level as in September.

More than half of those registered as completely unemployed or jobseekers on measures have an immigrant background, most of whom are Ukrainians.

At the end of November, gross unemployment was highest in tourism and transport (3.6 per cent of the workforce).

Highest unemployment in Østfold

During November, gross unemployment increased in most occupational groups. The increase was greatest in shop and sales work.

The proportion of completely unemployed and jobseekers on measures is highest in Østfold, with 3.5 per cent of the workforce. Troms has the lowest unemployment with 1.7 per cent of the workforce.

Gross unemployment has increased most in Møre og Romsdal in the last month, where there are now 5 per cent more unemployed than in October. At the same time, gross unemployment fell by 2 per cent in Troms and Vestfold in November.

Fewer vacancies

During November, 31,200 new vacancies were registered at Nav, which is 10 per cent fewer than in the same month last year. The number of positions is somewhat lower than the average for the year, adjusted for normal seasonal variations.

– We have to go back to October 2023 to find a correspondingly low number of vacancies, says Nav.

In Oslo, there are around 10,400 completely unemployed at the end of November. There are 871 more than at the same time last year, an increase of 9 per cent. At the same time, there is good demand for labor with just over 5,100 vacancies in the capital.
