Autumn 2021, November 2022, January 2023, March 2023, December 2023.
The planned premiere dates of the cinema documentary Hans Nielsen Hauge – The man who woke up Norway There have been many, but like several film productions The pandemic stuck in the wheels for many a tentative date.
In addition, an unexpected corona grant while the film was in post-production meant that they had the opportunity to process the final result. Producer and director Harald Flem says that the regulations were changed in early summer last year, and suddenly the production was eligible to apply. A couple of weeks before the film was to have its first pre-premiere, they were paid close to NOK 400,000 in support.
– Then there were a number of things that we did not have in place and were not completely satisfied with, so now we are making a kind of version 1.1 of the film, Flem tells Vårt Land.
– Three sentences in the Norwegian book
Almost two years after a press release announced that Thor Haavik, perhaps best known as the “Farmen” priest, would be the presenter and that the film would reach its audience during Hauge year 2021the film has not yet premiered.
2021 marked the 250th anniversary of the lay preacher and that of the industrial entrepreneur birth.
– A bit of the challenge with Hauge is that if you ask young adults who he is, they might read three sentences about him in the Norwegian book. If they weren’t there at that hour, they have no idea who he is.
It doesn’t appear that Flem cares significantly that the anniversary was missed. He admits that it would be opportune timing for investors as well as Hauge enthusiasts, but notes that this film is not aimed primarily at them.
– We want to reach new target groups, especially young people, and most of them don’t wear laces when it’s an anniversary. We probably lose a little because we don’t get to take advantage of such a date, but the goal is that the film should be able to live for many years to come, and be able to be used in confirmation teaching and The cultural school bag, and then it is not so critical.

Changes after test viewings
Premiere delays notwithstanding – around 5,000 people have already seen a version of the film, according to the production company’s estimates. Last summer they invited to a number of pre-premieres at several Christian conventions where some of the purpose was to use Christians as test audience.
– In 75 minutes, we are not able to cover everything about Hauge, so in that sense you will always disappoint someone. But those who have seen the film so far are perhaps those who can be considered Hauge fans, and their feedback is important, says Flem.
The director notes that it is perfectly normal to have test screenings, only that they have been allowed to run them to a larger audience than usual. In July last year, the documentary was shown to an audience of around 1,500 in the Oslofjord Convention Center – a screening that the industry organization Film & Kino thought was the largest audience screening for a documentary film in Norway. Later, the film was shown in Sarons dal in Kvinesdal and at Oase in Fredrikstad.
– Since then, we have been working on a kind of repackaging. We spend time on a number of elements I was not satisfied with last year, says Flem.
At the same time, he is clear that the film, which eventually gets a regular cinema premiere, is not a dramatically different version than the test audience was shown.
– There are no major changes, but it will provide more air and fresh film up a bit. I don’t think those who have seen the pre-premiere will feel cheated, but the film will have a visually nicer and tidier presentation.

New premiere date
The film is a kind of hybrid between drama and documentary. In addition to playing the aforementioned Thor Haavik, Odin Waage, known from the NRK series, plays the role Council bankHauge himself in several dramatized sequences.
– The dramatizations are important to us, because they are an educational tool to reach young people, says Flem.
At the same time, he hopes that the drama scenes “can give a taste of a potential feature film”. The production company Hans Media originally had ambitions of both documentary and feature filmbut Flem says that they were unable to finance the latter.
If film production continues at the same rate, one can imagine that the calendar shows 2024 before the film reaches the big screen. And that would perhaps make up for the year-long delay – next year it will be 200 years since Hans Nielsen Hauge’s death. The director, for his part, is sure that 2023 will be the year – but believes that the announced premiere date will soon be moved once more.
– It may very well be that it arrives significantly earlier. We are not going to be the new one The battle for Narvik. We decided to set a date that gives us some wiggle room. I aim to be finished long, long before December this year.
– What about the 200th anniversary in 2024?
– If someone can give us very convincing arguments that it would generate many viewers, then by all means. It looks great and nice with an anniversary, but when we want to reach a wider target group, it is not so leading. As I said, very few people know the dates around Hauge.
