WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Wichita police and Range 54 are trying to encourage gun owners to save a casing during a giveaway on Saturday.
Free vehicle gun safes will be given away in the parking lot of Range 54 to encourage gun owners to participate in Operation Save-a-Casing. The program asks gun owners to save at least two spent shell casings, and if their gun is ever stolen, they can submit the casing to police.
Police then send the casings to the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network. The network is a database containing images of spent bullets and cartridge casings recovered from crime scenes or confiscated guns. By submitting casings, gun owners can potentially help solve crimes and be reunited with their guns if they are stolen.
Free gun safes will be available from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday or while supplies last. Wichita police and Range 54 are also offering one free box of ammo to anyone who would like to shoot inside the range free of charge to take part in the Save-A-Casing program.
Range 54 is located at 5725 E. Kellogg Dr. in Wichita.
