– The tourist tax affects companies that already contribute to the community and create jobs all over the country. This can lead to more tourists opting out of campsites in favor of free parking in nature or at rest areas. It is paradoxical, as this has just been highlighted as one of the biggest challenges in areas that experience high pressure from tourism, says managing director of NHO Reiseliv, Kristin Krohn Devold.
The government has submitted a proposal for a tourist tax, or visitor contribution, for consultation. They suggest that it should be voluntary for the municipalities if they want to introduce the tax. It must be collected in connection with accommodation and can be a maximum of 5 per cent of the price for the accommodation.
Illegal parking and littering have already become a problem in several places in Norway, according to Krohn Devold. NHO Reiseliv fears that a further cost increase for the campsites could worsen the situation.
– It is a challenge when the tourist tax makes it more expensive to choose legal and organized alternatives. We risk wild camping becoming more widespread, which causes increased wear and tear on nature and more conflicts in local communities, says Krohn Devold.
