Southern California police shoot, kill alleged DUI driver on Thanksgiving Day

Police officers in Brea shot and killed an alleged DUI driver on Thursday afternoon, authorities say.

According to the Brea Police Department, officers were notified of a possible DUI driver in the area of Lambert Road and the 57 Freeway just before 4:45 p.m.

Responding officers found a vehicle “up against a retaining wall” in the westbound lanes of Lambert east of the freeway, authorities stated.

“Officers made contact with the driver [and] a short time later, an officer-involved shooting occurred,” Brea police said in a media release posted to social media. “The driver of the vehicle was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased by medical staff.”

Video from the scene taken by KTLA shows the aftermath of the shooting; the decedent’s SUV was seen wedged in between two squad cars with a bullet hole in the driver’s side window.

There were reports that the driver intentionally rammed into the police vehicles; however, Brea authorities did not mention that in their media release.

The exact circumstances of the shooting – including what caused the officers to open fire – was not disclosed. The identity of the decedent was also not released.

Per department policy, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office will conduct an investigation into the incident.

Anyone who witnessed the shooting or has further information is asked to contact the OCDA’s office by calling 714-664-3964.
