Pedestrian, 72, struck and killed by Southern California motorist

A 72-year-old pedestrian died after being struck by a driver in Riverside, officials announced Wednesday.  

The tragic collision occurred on Oct. 21 at around 5 p.m. at the intersection of Altadena Drive and Biscayne Avenue, according to a news release from the Riverside Police Department.  

At the scene, responding officers and fire personnel located the victim, who had suffered serious injuries. He was rushed to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.  

A preliminary investigation into the collision revealed the driver of a silver Chevrolet Equinox who was traveling westbound on Altadena Drive struck the 72-year-old as he was standing in the roadway.  

Detectives with Riverside Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team also responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.  

The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.  

The motorist behind the wheel of the Equinox was only identified as a 38-year-old resident of Riverside. It is unclear if they were arrested or are facing any charges in connection with the crash.

It is also unknown if drugs and alcohol may have been a factor in the deadly crash, authorities said.
