– We were on our way to vote, but the queues were too long earlier today. We will go back before the premises close and try again.
That’s what the couple Liz and Reg Saunders say, who went to the polls in Washington DC on Tuesday, but then had to turn around in the queue.
A few hours later, Dagsavisen’s seconded journalist in the USA, Ulrik Øen Johnsen, is at one of the city’s many polling stations, namely the Stead Park Recreation Center in central DC. It is assumed that queues will build up throughout the afternoon.
– At the moment there are not that long queues here, but earlier today and probably throughout the afternoon close to closing time, the queues will build up again, he says.

Technical problems
In several other places, there have been bigger challenges than the varying length of the queues.
Both in Iowa, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Iowa there have been technical problems so far.
Recently, in Story County in the state of Iowa, there have been reports of problems with voting machines that are on strike. At least 12 of the 45 polling stations in the area have problems. It is possible that the votes at these stations will have to be counted by hand, writes NTB.
In Wilson county i North Carolina a polling station had typing problems with a computer that meant voters could not vote for an hour. The electoral board in the county has held an emergency meeting and approved an extra half hour of voting in two premises.
In Apache County, Arizona, a technical failure of voting machines caused some voters to be turned away before they could vote. Navajo Nation Assistant State Attorney Katherine Belzowski calls the problems the biggest election day voting problems the county has seen, according to NTB.
In Cambria County in Pennsylvania, a software error, which interfered with the scanning of ballot papers, has also led to the voting time being extended to 22:00, which is 04:00 Norwegian time.
All cases mean that it will take longer to count the votes in those areas.

Bomb threats and bad weather
In three districts around Atlanta, Georgia, they have also requested an extension of voting hours. This is due to bomb threats, which are said to have been sent from Russian domains and have since been assessed as non-credible. It will push the window to one hour for now the districts have to report results.
In Michigan, authorities have also received threats against polling stations. These were initially considered serious, but just like in the case of Georgia, they have been declared not credible after investigation. The threats also led back to Russia.
In addition, bad weather in the central United States can create some challenges for people who want to vote.
