– This is obviously not the outcome we had hoped for, given our fundamental disagreements with the Republicans on a number of issues, Obama says in a joint statement with his wife Michelle.
– But living in a democracy is about accepting that our opinions do not always win out, and a willingness to accept a peaceful transfer of power.
In the statement, he congratulates Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance, before then thanking Kamala Harris and Tim Walz for their efforts in the election campaign.
– The United States has been through a lot in recent years, Obama continues, referring to the pandemic, subsequent price jumps and financial difficulties.
– The good news is that these problems can be fixed – but only if we listen to each other, and only if we respect the basic constitutional principles and democratic norms that have made this country great.
