As of Sunday, 7,000 ultra-Orthodox Jews will be called up for military service, Israeli media reports, including Haaretz.
They have until now been exempted from serving in the military, which is mandatory for all other Israelis. But as Israel’s military is stretched in connection with the wars in Gaza and Lebanon, there have been demands that more must contribute.
However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is reported to have been against calling in the ultra-Orthodox, as it risks uprooting his fragile government coalition.
The measure was nevertheless pushed forward by Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, who was fired around two weeks ago.
