In Punjab, Pakistan’s most populous province, a state of emergency has been declared in two major cities and a three-day shutdown has been ordered. The authorities have also decided that schools in the province’s big cities will remain closed for another week.
Hospitals in Lahore and Multan have been put on high alert as a result of the toxic smog enveloping the region.
The shutdown is the latest in a series of measures introduced to reduce pollution in Punjab over the past month, including a ban on motorized tricycles, barbecues, restaurants, brick ovens and vehicles with faulty engines.
In New Delhi, India, all primary school pupils must be homeschooled for the time being. In addition, almost all construction work is prohibited and road traffic is restricted. For several days, a fog of particulate matter, soot, sulfur dioxide and other gases has hung over the city.
