Giant ships and thousands of soldiers on their way to Oslo – Dagsavisen

Giant ships and thousands of soldiers on their way to Oslo – Dagsavisen

The aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman will arrive in Oslo on Friday, but for security reasons the Norwegian Armed Forces will not say how long it will stay.

The Oslo police state that there will be increased military activity along Akershusstranda in the coming days.

– We ask everyone to follow requests from the police and military guards, the police wrote on Friday morning.

The aircraft carrier, which is over 330 meters long, will join an American cruiser and an Italian frigate.

Just as visible and about the same size

Also last year, Oslo was visited by an American aircraft carrier. Then it was the world’s largest aircraft carrier, the Gerald R. Ford, which with its 333 meters lay down in the Oslo Fjord. There are not many meters separating the two vessels.

– This ship will be just as visible and about the same size, says Vice-Admiral Rune Andersen, head of the Norwegian Armed Forces’ operational headquarters, about Friday’s hangar visit.

He says that it is narrow to enter through Drøbaksundet, and that the entry of Harry S. Truman will also cause a stir.

Last year there was traffic chaos in the center of Drøbak because of all the visitors who wanted to see the giant ship. Now the Follo fire service again fears that there will be a traffic jam in the city centre, writes the local newspaper County.

Expect greater pressure on the nightlife

Now, as last year, several thousand American soldiers are coming to the city. The police therefore expect greater pressure on nightlife.

In connection with the visit, a number of restrictions have been introduced. Among other things, there is a ban on all types of drones with photo and video equipment. It is also forbidden to use such equipment from outside and into the prohibited areas, the National Security Authority informs NTB.

The reaction to a violation will normally be a fine of NOK 25,000 or imprisonment for 25 days if the fine cannot be collected, informs the police.

When sailing in and out of the Oslo Fjord, as well as during your stay in Oslo, military vessels and guards will ensure safety. Military restricted areas are established to ensure the safety of both the aircraft carrier and the public.

Sends a clear signal to Russia

The USS “Harry S. Truman” and the rest of the vessels have been training with the Norwegian Armed Forces in nearby Norwegian areas in recent weeks.

According to the Norwegian Armed Forces, the visit sends a clear signal to Russia that NATO is united and ready to react if our security is threatened.

– The security political situation we are in now will not go away anytime soon, so we have to get used to the fact that there is increased military activity almost continuously. Sometimes it becomes very visible, like when an aircraft carrier comes into Oslo, says Vice-Admiral Andersen.
