Palworld Shadow-Dropped for PlayStation 5

Palworld Shadow-Dropped for PlayStation 5

Key Takeaways

  • The PS5 version of Palworld was announced during the September 24 State of Play showcase.
  • The game’s PlayStation Store debut is imminent, Pocketpair said.
  • Palworld is set to reach the PS5 eight months following its PC and Xbox release and mere days after Nintendo sued Pocketpair over alleged patent infringements related to its hit game.

Palworld is coming to the PlayStation 5 later today, September 24. Its imminent PlayStation release was announced during Sony’s latest State of Play showcase.

PlayStation users have been asking for Palworld ever since the game launched in early access back in January 2024. Half a year later, developer Pocketpair announced Palworld Entertainment, a joint venture that it started with Sony Music Entertainment and Sony Group subsidiary Aniplex. While the recently established company was said to be geared toward expanding the Palworld brand into merchandise and other forms of media, its very existence also suggested that a PlayStation version of the hit game is only a question of time.

Palworld Announces Imminent PS5 Port Launch

These suspicions have now been proven correct, as Sony and Pocketpair officially announced the PS5 version of Palworld during today’s State of Play showcase. What’s more, the September 24 event saw the duo reveal that the game’s PlayStation launch is imminent and will happen later today. While its PS Store page is still not live as of this writing, it’s safe to assume that the PS5 version of Palworld will be priced at $29.99, the same as its PC and Xbox counterparts.

Although Palworld is also available on the Xbox One, Pocketpair so far hasn’t given any indication that it’s also planning on bringing it to Sony’s last-generation console. The pace of the game’s PS5 updates will presumably be on par with the Xbox versions, which are normally slightly behind PC. Given how Steam users can’t play the game with those who own it via the Xbox/Microsoft Store, cross-platform multiplayer likely won’t be part of Palworld‘s PS5 version, either.

Palworld Reaches PlayStation Amid Nintendo Lawsuit Drama

The game’s PlayStation Store shadow drop was announced mere days after Nintendo filed a lawsuit against Pocketpair in Japan, alleging that Palworld was infringing on some of its patents. This turn of events seemingly had little impact on Pocketpair’s partnership with Sony, which is only now beginning in earnest. The case itself is still in its infancy, and hence unlikely to be resolved for years.

In a statement provided to Game Rant, veteran patent analyst Florian Mueller said that Nintendo’s lawsuit is unlikely to have international consequences. “At most, they’ll do some damage in Japan, but probably not outside,” he explained, noting the possibility that Palworld doesn’t infringe on anything that could “withstand a serious court review.” Pocketpair confirmed it has already started legal proceedings related to the case, but said that it hasn’t been informed about any specifics of its alleged infringements in advance.
