The coronavirus develops over time and bypasses the protective antibodies from previous vaccines. That is one of the reasons why we still see waves of infection, despite the fact that most people in Norway have good protection against the virus, states the Norwegian Institute of Public Health.
But recent vaccination provides enhanced protection. It is therefore not inconceivable that there will be a need for regular updates of the vaccine in the future, such as for influenza.
– The study we have carried out shows that for those who took the corona vaccine last year, and have taken several doses previously, there is little protection left from the last vaccination against new virus variants, says senior researcher Even Fossum at the Institute of Public Health.
A new one study from FHI has revealed that older people aged 67 to 82 have low levels of protective antibodies against new virus variants of covid.
The institute therefore comes up with one recommendation about a new vaccine dose.
– The new study supports the recommendation for the elderly to take a booster dose of corona vaccine this autumn, says Preben Aavitsland, acting area director at FHI.
So far in the season, 546,836 people who are 65 years or older have taken the corona vaccine, according to the institute, with Oslo at the top of vaccinations among the elderly with 48 per cent and Finnmark at the bottom with 30 per cent.
