In a live press briefing on his own Facebook page, Duterte says Marcos is an incompetent president and calls him a liar. She then directs a threat at the sitting president.
– I have spoken to one person and I said: “If I am killed, go and kill Marcos, the first lady and Speaker Martin Romualdez”. I’m not kidding, says Duterte.
Duterte’s threat comes after her chief of staff was recently arrested for failing to respond to allegations of misused funds at the vice president’s office during a House of Representatives hearing.
Relations between Duterte and Marcos have soured recently after they jointly won the presidential election in the Philippines in 2022. Both are children of former presidents and represent two of the Philippines’ most powerful political families.
The former is the daughter of Rodrigo Duterte, who ruled from 2016 to 2022, while Marcos is the son of Ferdinand Marcos, a dictator who ruled from 1965 until his ouster in 1986.
The Presidential Communications Office has said that Duterte’s actions are perceived as a serious threat to the president.
– As a response to the vice president’s clear statement that she has hired an assassin to kill the president if something happens to her, this matter has been forwarded to the president’s security service for follow-up, the communications office writes in a statement.
