Israel calls for a boycott of the newspaper Haaretz – Dagsavisen

State-funded actors have been told by the authorities to cut contact with Haaretz and no longer advertise in the traditional newspaper.

The reason is that the Israeli government believes Haaretz has written “articles that have damaged the legitimacy of the State of Israel and the right to self-defense”, reports the newspaper self.

The decision will also be a response to a speech the newspaper’s publisher Amos Schocken gave in London in October, where, according to the government’s accusations, he “supported terrorism and called for sanctions against the Israeli authorities”.

In the speech, Schocken accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government of operating apartheid against Palestinians and mentioned “Palestinian freedom fighters”, which he later clarified did not refer to Hamas, which is labeled a terrorist in Israel.

Haaretz is Israel’s oldest newspaper and is normally described as left-liberal. The newspaper refers to the government’s latest decision as “another step towards Netanyahu’s attempt to dismantle Israeli democracy”.

Haaretz has long criticized Netanyahu’s policies.
