Gary Wayt could have been just one of Amber Portwood’s love interests to Teen Mom fans. Their breakup likely wouldn’t have even made headlines if he hadn’t made the drastic decision to fake his own disappearance to end their engagement. In the months following his June 2024 disappearance, Wayt opted to live in anonymity, but now he’s stepped forward. Earlier this month, Gary Wayt, the man that fans of the franchise have dubbed Gary 2.0, spoke out about his proposal, engagement, and disappearance. While Amber Portwood hasn’t commented, her co-star is calling her former fiance out on his version of events.
Gary Wayt claims he was pressured into the proposal
Gary Wayt shocked Teen Mom viewers when he inexplicably agreed to an interview with TeenMomFanz after months of absolute silence. During his brief chat with the outlet, Wayt spilled a bit of tea. The most shocking revelation was the fact that his proposal was allegedly “staged.”
Wayt told the outlet that he felt pressured to propose to Portwood. Gary Wayt claimed that MTV had cooked up the awkward and uncomfortable couch proposal for the cameras. Wayt asserted he didn’t buy the ring and didn’t consider his engagement to the woman he dated for about eight months “genuine.” Wayt has since moved on and is rumored to be engaged to a new woman. He didn’t go into detail about his current life or whether he is involved with someone new, though.
Catelynn Lowell calls out Gary 2.0 for misleading fans
Catelynn Lowell recently popped up in a TikTok video’s comment section covering the Gary 2.0 situation. In her comments on RealityTVwithRei’s Live TikTok event, Lowell suggested that Wayt only told half the story about his engagement to Portwood. The Teen Mom: The Next Chapter star admitted that the proposal that fans say was “staged” for the cameras. Still, she said, the engagement wasn’t staged nor forced upon Wayt.
Lowell claims Wayt proposed to Portwood privately the night before when the cameras weren’t rolling. MTV just staged a second proposal for the show in front of Maci Bookout and Lowell, who were visiting Portwood in Indiana. Lowell cleared up the ring situation, as well. Gary Wayt made it sound like MTV purchased the ring for him to give Portwood during the proposal. Lowell said that Wayt was misrepresenting that, too.
She said the ring belonged to Portwood’s family, and she and Wayt planned to reset the stone for Portwood. While Wayt tried to act like he had no hand in the proposal and was forced to go along with it for filming purposes, Lowell is telling a much different story. While Lowell hasn’t always been a reliable narrator of her own life, her version of events makes much more sense.
