Monday’s Premier League match ended in an emphatic 2-0 victory for West Ham after goals from Tomas Soucek and former Manchester United player Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
The Newcastle supporters had hoped to see Alexander Isak score and met the Swede with a rare special tifo.
Before the match, the entire short side of the arena was covered in yellow and blue flags that together spelled out Isak’s name. On the opposite side flew a large banner with the inscription “Alexander the Great”.
The situation that came the closest the 25-year-old came to rewarding his own fans with a goal came in the first half. The Newcastle striker then playfully put the ball into the goal after coming alone with the goalkeeper, but the VAR check revealed a clear offside.
Instead, West Ham took their fourth win of the season and climbed to 14th place in the table.
Newcastle are number ten, but did not deliver a good performance on Monday. Manager Eddie Howe had a lot to think about after all the sunburns.
