– We must do what we can to ensure that patient injuries do not occur, says Health and Care Minister Jan Christian Vestre (Ap) in a press release.
The proposal implies that the National Commission of Inquiry for the Health and Care Service (Ukom) is merged with the National Health Inspectorate, and that the current two notification systems for serious incidents are reduced to one. It is also proposed to create a national overview.
– I believe that a pooling of the expertise of Ukom and the Norwegian Health Authority will be able to provide an even better starting point for learning and improvement, says Vestre.
The proposal comes after that Television 2 in autumn has reported that almost 1,000 people have lost their lives in unwanted incidents in Norwegian hospitals in the last five years. In all the deaths, communication failure was a contributing factor.
– I believe that the cases we have seen throughout the autumn show that there is a need for action. That is why we have worked intensely to get this in place, says Vestre to the channel.
In the new scheme, notifications of serious incidents must be sent to the state administrators.
The hearing deadline in the case is 20 January 2025.
