The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) has measured the thickness of Langfjordjøkulen in Finnmark and Engabreen in Nordland, reports NRK.
Glacier researcher Liss Marie Andreassen from NVE says that the researchers have never before measured such figures for these glaciers – and that this year’s melting was extraordinarily large.
– This year’s figures were quite special, a bit shocking for me as a glacier researcher to see such a large melting in one year, she says.
The directorate has also measured the glacier fronts in 35 places throughout the country. All with the exception of the Stigaholt glacier in Vestland have withdrawn.
The famous Nigardsbreen in Luster in Vestland has retreated so much that the glacier front is no longer visible from a photo spot at the bottom of the car park at Nigardsvatnet, the glacier researcher says.
– The tourists have to go further towards the glacier if they want to take pictures, she says to NRK.
