Ocasio-Cortez, popularly called AOC, is a prominent voice for the left wing of the Democratic Party who has worked closely with President Joe Biden.
At 29, she surprised when in 2018 she won over veteran Joe Crowley in the primary election and was subsequently elected to the House of Representatives.
AOC, who has Puerto Rican ancestry and is elected from a Bronx and Queens constituency in New York City, is a member of The Squad, an informal group of progressive Democrats.
