Kevin Costner wants to be known for more than just his roles on the big screen.
He knows he’s lucky for his fame and status as a massive star in the entertainment world, and now he wants to pay it forward to those whose world’s have been shattered by recent hurricanes in Florida, the Carolinas and the rest of the South.
Costner’s bandmates in Kevin Costner & Modern West saw the damage done by hurricanes Helene and Milton and decided to use their platform to help those in need. As suggested by two of Costner’s bandmates in the rock band, the proceeds from the group’s new single will go entirely toward hurricane survivors.
“Those people down there have been going to my movies for years and supporting me with ‘Horizon’ and everything else,” he told KTLA’s Mary Beth McDade. “I said ‘let’s do it.'”
“Find Your Way” is the band’s first new song in four years. They’ve been playing together for 22.
Costner said the message behind the song is one he hopes hurricane victims can view as hopeful.
“It speaks so out loud to this moment. I think we all understand what happens when it gets dark, when it feels like there’s no hope,” he said. “When you feel like, in some sense, prayers haven’t been answered.”
The song is available on the group’s Bandcamp page at a “pay what you want” rate. All proceeds go toward HopeForce International, a disaster relief organization with boots on the ground in the sites most affected by the pair of hurricanes.
Costner hopes that philanthropy like this can be a larger part of his legacy than his time in the movies.
“What do I want to be known about? Put it on my headstone, ‘and he made movies too,'” he said.
