Alleged impaired driver hits, injures 2 Southern California police officers

A man has been arrested on suspicion of DUI after a collision left two police officers in Southern California hospitalized.

According to the Simi Valley Police Department, two squad cars were traveling southbound on Tapo Canyon Road near the 118 Freeway at about 9:25 p.m. Thursday when they were struck by a driver who was going the same direction. The man was driving at a high rate of speed, authorities said, but his exact speed was not disclosed.

All three vehicles involved sustained major damage, police said, and two Simi Valley officers were injured.

They were transported to a local hospital. Their conditions are stable, police said.

The exact extent of their injuries were not revealed.

The driver that struck the officers was identified as 28-year-old Simi Valley resident Luis Fernando Piceno-Venegas. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
