With Zelda in the lead role as The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom‘s main playable protagonist, the developers at Nintendo and Grezzo had to get creative with the game’s take on combat. Early in the game, Zelda fights with Echoes, copies of the various items and enemies encountered in Hyrule. On their own, Echoes allow for a huge range of possibilities, with practically no limit to the experimentation available to players. However, the devs didn’t stop there. About midway through the Echoes of Wisdom, players will have the opportunity to unlock Automatons.
Automatons are a special combat tool available to Zelda in Echoes of Wisdom. Unlike Echoes, Automatons are mechanical objects that are developed by Dampé, the Automaton Engineer. This guide will show players how to locate Dampé, and how to complete his side-quest “Automaton Engineer Dampé,” which unlocks Automatons in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom.
Where to Find Dampé in Echoes of Wisdom
To find Dampé, players will first have to complete the “Still Missing” main-quest, which automatically begins after completing Suthorn Ruins, Jabul Ruins, and Gerudo Sanctum. After clearing Hyrule Castle, the rest of Hyrule will become available, and several new side-quests will open up, including “Automaton Engineer Dampé.”
Dampé is found just north of Hyrule Ranch, where players will find their first horse in Echoes of Wisdom. From the northern gate of the ranch, make your way just slightly northeast into Hyrule Field. After a moment, a short cutscene will automatically begin. Dampé will be seen trying to get a key back from a pesky crow, and the side-quest will then be initiated.
Once you have control of Zelda, use your preferred Echo for taking out flying enemies. The Crow or Guay Echoes work well. Once the crow is defeated, head to the item it drops and pick it up. This will prompt Dampé to thank you, and a look at the quest description reveals the key was the special Clockwork Key. Dampé asks you to visit him at his house to continue the mission.
Where to Find Dampé Studio in Echoes of Wisdom:
You can find Dampé’s home, called Dampé Studio on the map, on the path of land west of Jabul Waters, and northeast of Hyrule Castle. The location should be marked on your map with a small blue dot.
When you arrive at Dampé Studio, he will reward you for your earlier help with five Twisted Pumpkins. He will then inform you of his intention to create special tools to help you in combat, which are the Automatons. To make his first creation, he will need two Echoes:
- Echo 1: Tektite
- Echo 2: Mothula
Where to Find Mothula and Tektite in Echoes of Wisdom
Tektite Location:
If you do not already have the Tektite Echo, there is a series of small canyons near Dampé’s original location that is always occupied by several of these jumping enemies. Head there to collect the first Echo.
Mothula Location:
The Mothula Echo is found in the Gerudo Sanctum. If you did not collect the Echo while you were traversing the dungeon, you can still head back in and collect it.
How to Unlock Automatons in Echoes of Wisdom
Once you have both Echoes, return to Dampé Studio. Summon each Echo on the small platform in Dampé’s workshop, and he will use them to create the first Automaton: the Techtite. Along with this, you’ll receive the Clockwork Key, which allows Zelda to wind up her Automatons for use.
The Techtite, along with all Automatons, are summoned by holding left on the D-Pad and selecting it. Once summoned, you must hold Y to wind it up with the Clockwork Key. The Techtite can clear large groups of enemies by launching into the air with a large explosion. It is also capable of setting foes on fire.
If the Techtite is damaged, you’ll need to return to Dampé Studio to have it fixed, for a small fee of course.
Crafting More Automatons:
After you craft the Techtite, and complete “Automaton Engineer Dampé,” you’ll notice Dampé’s Journal sitting on the desk in his studio. Reading this book will unlock the next quest for Dampé, titled “Explosions Galore.” This process will begin the journey of unlocking more Automatons in Echoes of Wisdom.
