V/H/S/85

Read Our Review

The next exciting entry in the V/H/S anthology series harkens back to the days of 1980s filmmaking. V/H/S/85, appropriately lit up with neon lights and doused in fog machines, collects several different horror-centric short films from a plethora of directors, with the whole shebang focusing on a specific theme. This time around, we’re jumping back to the 1980s, with several era-appropriate stories featured in the short films presented here.

What Makes It Great?

The biggest strengths of V/H/S/85 lie solely within its anthology format. Well-known directors like Scott Derrickson, as well as new visionaries like Gigi Saul Guerrero and Natasha Kermani, all lend their talents to each of their respective shorts. David Bruckner, who previously directed 2022’s Hellraiser, is in charge of the wrap-around segments as well, tying each of these exciting shorts into a linear narrative. If you’re the kind of horror fan who appreciates variety in their frightful films, V/H/S/85 is up there as one of Shudder’s best offerings.

Perpetrator

Read Our Review

Described by some as an unconventional mash-up of David Lynch and David Cronenberg movies, the Shudder-exclusive Perpetrator is sure to turn heads. Directed by Jennifer Reeder, this flashy horror flick sees Kiah McKirnan (Night Sky) playing the role of Jonny Baptiste, a free-spirited teen sent to live with her Aunt Hildie. When she turns eighteen, however, the unveiling of a family spell grants her supernatural abilities, compelling her to investigate the disappearances of several other students in her area. Alicia Silverstone (The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Clueless) makes a surprising appearance as Hildie.

What Makes It Great?

Perpetrator is a movie that takes the coming-of-age formula and gives it a terrifying body horror twist. Bursts of dark humor, buckets of blood, and unconventional cinematography make for one of the most eclectic Shudder originals of the year, made all the more impressive by its reliance on visceral metaphors.

Sharksploitation

Read Our Review

If you missed out on this year’s Shark Week, there’s a neat documentary on Shudder that chronicles our toothy friends in the film industry. Directed by Stephen Scarlata, Sharksploitation is a brilliant documentary that focuses on the titular subgenre, which came about shortly after the release of Jaws. Just about everyone you can think of lends their analysis to Sharksploitation. Filmmakers, film critics, and those outside the film industry showcase examples of the subgenre, analyze their impact on the perception of sharks, and examine just how influential shark attack films were to contemporary filmmaking as a whole.

What Makes It Great?

Sharksploitation is a documentary that takes the modern-day perception of sharks and casts a light on how it came to be. It cannot be understated just how influential cinema was when it came to how we view our toothy friends. Sharksploitation even ends with a heartfelt plea to treat these creatures with respect instead of vilifying them further.

Flora and Son

After Hulu’s Up Here was swiftly canceled earlier this year, there was a newfound musical gap in the streaming market. Fortunately, if you’re currently subscribed to AppleTV+, Flora and Son will likely fill that gap with some incredible compositions. This musical dramedy sees Eve Hewson starring as Flora, a single mother living in Dublin, who’s trying to keep her son on the right path. When she’s searching for a hobby to keep him preoccupied, she finds a solution in the form of an abandoned guitar.

What Makes It Great?

Flora and Son come to us from the minds of composer Gary Clark and director John Carney, the latter being an Irish director whose specialty lies within musical dramas. After writing and directing films like Begin Again and Sing Street, Flora and Son is yet another prime example of his songwriting talent. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Jack Reynor also star alongside Hewson, who also happens to be the daughter of famed musician Bono.

The Beanie Bubble

Read Our Review

If you’re old enough to remember Beanie Babies, you’re old enough to remember The Beanie Bubble. Based on the titular fixation on stuffed plush toys, Zach Galifianakis stars alongside Elizabeth Banks, Sarah Snook, and Geraldine Viswanathan in a story focused on the nostalgic toy craze of the ’90s. Beanie Babies, which originally debuted to the public in the early 1990s, were a series of plush toys that spurred a collection frenzy due to their resale value and widespread popularity.

What Makes It Great?

Kristin Gore and Damian Kulash Jr. directed this intriguing toy-based tale, reflecting a bizarre phenomenon made possible by the internet in its infancy. Though it joins other product-oriented films like Tetris and BlackBerry, The Beanie Bubble makes an effort to combine comedy and drama in a way that feels actively engaging throughout its plush journey.

Good Burger 2

Did we really need a follow-up to Good Burger? Given Good Burger 2‘s popularity, it looks like we did. Good Burger 2 picks up twenty-six years after the events of the first film. Dexter Reed has distanced himself from the titular restaurant in pursuit of independent entrepreneurship. Unfortunately, when his latest attempt at innovating fails, he’s forced to return to Good Burger once more to get back on his feet. Though Dexter is greeted with warm faces and a wonderful reunion with Ed, his attempts to break out from his greasy occupation may put the entire establishment at risk. Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell reprise their roles from the original film, in addition to producing the production as a whole.

What Makes It Great?

Good Burger 2 is a welcome nostalgia trip for fans of this wacky comedy franchise. A plethora of celebrity cameos, including appearances from Mark Cuban, Andy Samburg, and Nicole Richie can be found throughout. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is a fresh and exciting animated film that isn’t afraid to take creative risks. Directed by Jeff Rowe, who previously co-directed the similarly-stylish The Mitchells vs. the Machines, Mutant Mayhem acts as a franchise reboot for our favorite reptilian martial artists, albeit with some grungy redesigns. The turtles, having grown from Baxter Stockman’s mutagenic ooze, now find themselves taking on an organized crime syndicate while trying to blend into human society, all with the help of their teenage friend April O’Neil.

What Makes It Great?

Featuring a unique “sketchbook” style that resembles hand-drawn animation, Mutant Mayhem looks to be one of the most colorful films of the year. Its ensemble voice cast featuring Jackie Chan, John Cena, Rose Byrne, Ayo Edebiri, and more all have exemplary chemistry with each other. Not only that, the score provided by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross makes every memorable scene pop. If you’ve written off Transformers due to the mixed quality of Michael Bay’s films, you may want to reconsider. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is a film made for fans of the original series and newcomers alike, featuring a long-awaited team-up that made headlines during its initial reveal to the public. The evil Decepticons are at it again, but this time around, Optimus Prime and the heroic Autobots find an unlikely ally in the Maximals: prehistoric transformers that take the form of gargantuan animals.

What Makes It Great?

Rise of the Beasts marks a notable creative shift for the Transformers franchise. The inclusion of celebrity voices like Ron Perlman, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Yeoh, and John DiMaggio brings these new fighting machines to life alongside the franchise’s mainstays, including the beloved Peter Cullen. Unafraid to embrace its toy-driven roots, the colorful action and unexpected cameos found in Rise of the Beasts amount to a Transformers movie worthy of older and younger fans alike.

After eight years of development, one of the biggest contemporary video game franchises to date has finally gotten its chance to shine on the silver screen. Five Nights at Freddy’s is a horror film based on the titular series by Scott Cawthon. The film sees Josh Hutcherson playing the role of a lonesome nighttime security guard at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria, an abandoned family entertainment center. David Fincher returns to the world of film — and Netflix, coincidentally — with his latest thriller. The Killer sees Michael Fassbender playing the role of our titular assassin, a cold and calculating man who puts his business above all else. No Hard Feelings was a surprising 2023 release, not only for its bizarre premise but for its unexpected cast as well. The film sees Jennifer Lawrence playing the role of Maddie Barker: a down-on-her-luck bartender just trying to get by. Unfortunately, she finally hits rock bottom when her car and home are under the threat of repossession. In desperation, Barker turns to an unusual online job listing for some quick cash. All she has to do is “date” Percy Becker (Andrew Barth Feldman), the son of the wealthy Becker family, before he heads off to college for the first time. Gene Stupnitsky (Jury Duty) is directing here, with Laura Benanti, Matthew Broderick, and Natalie Morales joining the supporting cast.

What Makes It Great?

If you’ve been aching for a return to raunchy comedy, No Hard Feelings is an excellent choice for such an occasion. Given Stupnitsky’s experience with the critically beloved Jury Duty and The Office, you can expect a similar level of effective cringe comedy to be found here. Of course, the comedy is balanced by an equal level of genuine heart, examining how flawed people can improve themselves in unconventional ways.

What Makes It Great?

Shortly after its debut, Reptile dominated Netflix’s viewership charts, debuting with nearly 20 million views over a single week. Knowing what’s on offer here, the overnight popularity is rightfully earned. The film garnered significant praise for its moody atmosphere and copious intrigue, complementing the somber tone established throughout. El Conde is a film carried almost solely by its high-concept premise. It’s hard to place it into a single genre: some have described it as a dark comedy, whereas others are more intrigued by its numerous horror elements. The follow-up to 2022’s Death of the Nile is certainly a surprising one. Prior to the MLB as we know it today, the Negro Leagues would serve as a unifying fixture of black communities throughout the early 1900s, providing a place for players and families alike to share a mutual love of baseball. Sam Pollard documents the creation and maintenance of the Negro Leagues through archival footage and interviews with iconic players in this brilliant documentary, all while emphasizing their importance to the community as a whole.

What Makes It Great?

Though The League is primarily about baseball, there’s a powerful emotional core to be found throughout. Interviews with famous players like Willie Mays and Satchel Paige paint a fascinating picture of what the Negro Leagues truly represented, making this film essential for fans of the sport. Just be sure to bring your peanuts and cracker jacks.

The Mill

Read Our Review

The Mill is one of Hulu’s latest thrillers, marking the sophomoric title by director Sean King O’Grady. The film, which was the last project produced by 20th Digital Studio, sees Lil Rel Howery both producing and starring as its lead character. Howery plays Joe, an everyday employee of the Mallard Corporation, who wakes up in a bizarre, prison-like facility. All he knows for sure is that he’s not alone, and to get enough sustenance to survive, he’ll have to operate an ancient grinding mill. Can Joe escape this predicament before he misses the birth of his first child?

What Makes It Great?

Some of the best thriller films tend to reflect contemporary issues in society. The Mill in particular takes a swing at cold corporate culture and the working conditions of those forced to partake in it, with a healthy dose of AI concerns thrown into the mix as well. Lil Rel Howery shows a terrific range of emotions as our lead, and you can’t help but cheer him on as The Mill reaches a dramatic conclusion.

Stephen King adaptations usually rely on a coin flip for their overall quality. Luckily, The Boogeyman seems to have landed right-side up. Directed by Rob Savage, who previously directed the found footage horror films Host and Dashcam, The Boogeyman sees the Harper family devastated by the loss of their mother. As the Harper sisters finally come to terms with their loss, they’ll find that a horrifying presence has infested their home with their grieving father none the wiser.

What Makes It Great?

The Boogeyman is a surprisingly unsettling Stephen King adaptation that miraculously survived Disney’s acquisition of Fox. Sophie Thatcher and Vivien Lyra Blair put on a pair of powerful performances as our leading siblings, and our monstrous Boogeyman is utterly terrifying the few times you get to see him.

Even if you’ve never participated in your local theater program, it doesn’t stop Theater Camp from being an effective comedy. Serving as the directorial debut of Molly Gordon and Nick Lieberman, this 2023 comedy is a feature-length adaptation of the titular 2020 short film. How to Blow Up a Pipeline

Read Our Review

With a title like How to Blow Up a Pipeline, you can’t expect subtlety. Based on the 2021 book by Andreas Malm, How to Blow Up Pipeline crafts a thrilling narrative from the same director as 2018’s Cam, Daniel Goldhaber. Set in the middle of Texas, eight young miscreants attempt to solve the ecological plights of climate change by taking drastic measures. By “drastic,” we mean two attempts to blow up a recently constructed oil pipeline in two separate locations. Ariela Barer (Runaways), Kristine Froseth (The Society), Lukas Gage (Euphoria, The Vandal), and Forrest Goodluck (The Revenant) are just a handful of names attached to our cast.

What Makes It Great?

Though searching for the film’s title may set off some alarm bells, How to Blow Up a Pipeline has seen positive reception for its tense pacing and complex morality. Like all thought-provoking films, it raises some uncomfortable questions that don’t necessarily have a correct answer. Thankfully, it also works well as a thrilling heist film on top of these moral conundrums.

Need a compelling courtroom drama? You’re in luck, as Prime Video is now home to Maggie Betts’ latest film, The Burial. Loosely based on a true story, The Burial sees Jamie Foxx and Tommy Lee Jones playing the lawyer Willie E. Gary and his client Jeremiah Joseph O’Keefe respectively. The two find themselves suing the Loewen funeral company after a reneged business contract puts O’Keefe’s business at financial risk. Will the two be able to win their case against the Loewen funeral company? Or will their suit inadvertently dig up some long-forgotten dirt from Loewen’s operations?

What Makes It Great?

If you enjoy true crime but aren’t as much of a fan of blood and guts, The Burial is an excellent compromise compounded by terrific performances. Foxx and Jones play off of each other well, with the former giving one of his best performances in years. Beyond the legal drama, there’s also some interesting insight into the culture of the mid-’90s American South, giving this exciting true story some real weight behind it.

Slasher throwbacks never seem to get old. The same can be said for Prime Video’s latest entry in this deadly subgenre. Totally Killer, directed by Nahnatchka Khan, tells an intriguing time travel story that jumps from 2023 to 1987. When Jamie, played by Kiernan Shipka, is affected by a horrible tragedy in the present, she figures out a way to jump back in time to the 1980s. In doing so, she’ll hopefully find a way to stop the terrifying Sweet 16 Killer before he can strike again. Olivia Holt, Charlie Gillespie, and Randall Park can also be seen performing a variety of roles.

What Makes It Great?

Totally Killer is a terrific horror comedy from the ever-popular Blumhouse Productions. In typical Blumhouse fashion, Totally Killer saw praise for its melding of genres and its humorous jokes, delivering spine-chilling scares and gut-busting laughs in equal measure. Kiernan Shipka gets a chance to shine as an up-and-coming scream queen as well, having previously starred in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Mad Men. It’s campy, it’s self-aware, and best of all, it’s plain old fun.

One of humanity’s greatest achievements has to be the invention of space travel. With little more than sheer determination, Hernández will find himself reaching for the stars from humble roots on Earth. Alejandra Márquez directed this humble picture, having previously directed films like 2018’s The Good Girls.

What Makes It Great?

Alright, hear us out: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is worth seeing at least once, based on what you want to get out of it. Directed by James Mangold and featuring a returning Harrison Ford, we follow our beloved Indy as he enters the late 1960s with his estranged goddaughter, Helena (Phoebe Waller-Bridge). It’s fun to see Harrison Ford go on one last adventure, the drastic change in setting and direction is refreshing, and a returning John Williams even provides another stellar score. Despite concerns about his age, Harrison Ford’s performance was as iconic as it was in Indy’s last adventure, which was a whopping 15 years ago.

Haunted Mansion continues to be one of Disney’s most popular franchises, and given the company’s penchant for remaking its existing properties, we should’ve expected a modern reimagining sooner rather than later. An ensemble cast comprised of LaKeith Stanfield, Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson, Jared Leto, Jamie Lee Curtis, and more take on the titular possessed domicile in this family-friendly Halloween spectacle. What Makes It Great?

Firmly set in New Orleans, Haunted Mansion differentiates itself from its previous 2003 incarnation with plenty of modern touches. Some pretty impressive digital effects bring a new band of ghoulish spirits to life, with some ghosts like the infamous Constance Hathaway getting a terrifying modern makeover. LaKeith Stanfield gives it his all as our lead, and Jared Leto makes a surprise appearance as the infamous Hatbox Ghost found in the original Disneyland attraction. Elemental had one of the most impressive box office returns of the year, doubly so when you consider how long it had been in theaters before hitting streaming. Set in a world comprised of four elements — air, water, fire, and earth — we follow the budding relationship between Ember (Leah Lewis) and Wade (Mamoudou Athie), a fire element and water element respectively, as they learn that opposites may attract. That being said, water and fire historically don’t go together.

What Makes It Great?

Helmed by Peter Sohn of The Good Dinosaur, Elemental was faced with mixed initial reactions when it finally debuted in theaters. However, over time, positive word of mouth has allowed it to blossom into yet another beloved film in Pixar’s expansive filmography. It purposefully breaks the established Pixar formula by veering into the romantic comedy genre, crafting a believable relationship between two well-developed characters. Elemental also features some of Pixar’s most beautiful animation to date, with each element’s physical and chemical properties being utilized in their respective character designs.

Arguably Disney’s biggest live-action remake, The Little Mermaid, was initially met with pretty diverse reactions. But now that it’s streaming a few months after its theatrical run, it’s easier than ever to see the film’s positive qualities. Halle Bailey plays this film’s version of Ariel, a mermaid princess who finds her life in the vast ocean dull compared to the fantastic world above. After she makes a deal with a sea witch, Ursula (Melissa McCarthy), she trades her voice for the ability to walk on land, potentially finding love in a human prince named Eric (Jonah Hauer-King). However, this short-lived deal may have disastrous consequences.

What Makes It Great?

As the second most expensive live-action Disney remake to date, you can easily see where most of the budget went. The Little Mermaid is downright gorgeous to look at, with most of the original film’s assets making a stellar transition to reality. Combined with memorable songs both old and new, terrific performances, and a compelling Ariel, you can consider The Little Mermaid to be a valiant effort in recreating the original 1989 classic.

The conclusion to the James Gunn Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy is finally streaming. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 sees our titular superhero team reuniting once more after the events of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, with Rocket Raccoon on the run from his original creator: the mad scientist known only as the “High Evolutionary.” James Gunn returns to write and direct alongside an exemplary ensemble cast, with big names like Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Linda Cardellini, Sylvester Stallone, Chris Pratt, and more attached.

Critics all seem to agree that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is one of the better MCU films of Phase Five. Some have even taken note of the film’s surprisingly heart-wrenching moments, with its darker elements initially spurring some divisive opinions shortly after it was released in theaters. Now that things have cooled off, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is seen as a fitting end for one of the most creative trilogies in the MCU.
