Brazilian police have now concluded the investigation and an 800-page long report has been sent to the country’s Attorney General Paulo Gonet.
He will now decide whether charges should be brought against Bolsonaro and the others who, according to the police, were involved.
According to the police report, there is evidence that Bolsonaro actively participated in the planning of an attempted coup after he lost the election to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in autumn 2022.
A few days after Lula’s inauguration, Bolsonaro supporters stormed the country’s national assembly and several other government buildings in what the police said was an attempted coup.
Didn’t get support
Together with 36 others, the far-right politician planned, according to the police, “a violent takeover of the democratic state”.
However, the coup attempt failed, which according to the police was due to the fact that the coup plotters did not receive the support they had hoped for from the country’s military.
The commander-in-chief of the army and air force refused to participate in the coup, while according to the police there is evidence that the now-retired admiral Almir Garnier supported the plan.

Assassination plans
According to the police, Bolsonaro also had “full knowledge” of the assassination plan against Lula and his vice-president Geraldo Alckmin.
The investigators base this on a telephone conversation that took place between those involved in the plan and the presidential residence.
Four soldiers in the country’s special forces and a policeman were arrested earlier this month in connection with the assassination plan.

Refuses
Bolsonaro denies having participated in planning coups and assassinations and warns of a fight in the judiciary if charges are brought.
He also accuses the Supreme Court judge who is responsible for the case, of “stepping outside the scope of the law”.
If Gonet brings charges against Bolsonaro, it will probably thwart his plans to run for re-election in 2026.
