Of all the injuries the San Francisco 49ers are dealing with right now, Christian McCaffrey’s calf strain and Achilles tendonitis are the most concerning.

He has missed each of their first three games this season, and since he was placed on injured reserve just prior to the Week 2 loss at the Minnesota Vikings, he will miss at least two more games.

Per Adam Schefter, he had traveled to Germany to see a specialist and seek treatment options for his Achilles issue.

McCaffrey is the best running back in the NFL, and the 49ers are missing much more than his pure rushing ability.

He is a security blanket for quarterback Brock Purdy when Purdy is being pressured, and he is a solid blocker who can open up opportunities for teammates.

Last year, McCaffrey led the NFL with 1,459 rushing yards, 2,023 total yards from scrimmage and 21 total touchdowns, which earned him the Offensive Player of the Year award and even some MVP consideration.

Achilles issues are very scary, since the obvious concern is suffering a torn or ruptured Achilles, which is arguably the worst injury an athlete can sustain.

McCaffrey had been a bit injury-prone over the years, so playing it safe seems to be the best bet for the Niners right now.
