Classic PS2 Horror Game from 2003 Could Be Making a Comeback

Key Takeaways

  • Siren, a survival horror game, may be making a comeback based on a new rating.
  • The rating for Siren has sparked much speculation from fans online.
  • Fans should keep their expectations in check as it might only be a Korean release of the emulated 2016 version.

The PlayStation 2 survival horror classic Siren is seemingly making a comeback in some form after a rating of the game appeared on the website for the Game Rating and Administration Committee of Korea. While the rating does little to explicitly confirm a potential return for Siren, it has led to much speculation online from fans, as the game is already available on the PS4 in most regions through PlayStation 2 emulation.

Released in 2003 by former Sony subsidiary Japan Studio, Siren is a survival horror game with a focus on stealth, pitting players against undead creatures called shibito as they explore an old-fashioned Japanese village. The game features multiple interconnected stories from several playable characters in a similar vein to Resident Evil 6, each of which is equipped with psychic powers.

A recent tweet from Gematsu revealed a rating for the game that appeared from the Game Rating and Administration Committee of Korea, sparking speculation about a potential remaster for Siren. Of course, there is no known information about what form the alleged new release of Siren might take, though some speculate that it may just be a Korean release of the emulated 2016 version that most other regions already received.

Korean Rating Site Seems to Confirm Siren’s Return

Of course, a remaster or potential remake is not out of the question, as horror remakes have been massively successful in recent years, with the latest example being the much-anticipated Silent Hill 2 remake set to release next month. That being said, Siren has already received a sort of remake in the past, with Siren: Blood Curse from 2008 serving as a reimagining of the original game, though a true-to-form remake may still be in the cards.

Despite its relatively average critical reception, Siren was successful enough to receive a sequel, as well, likely due to the involvement of writer Keiichiro Toyama, known for his work on the original Silent Hill. The game even received a Japanese film adaptation in 2006 which deviated somewhat from the original plot and was released to mostly middling reviews from fans and critics.

In any case, the recent surge of horror remakes has ushered in a lot of excitement among fans of the genre as various classic titles have begun to see modern versions on up-to-date hardware. Between the massively successful Resident Evil remakes and recent speculation surrounding the possible return of the Dino Crisis series, horror fans have had plenty to play, with even more on the horizon in the coming years.
