Family mourns Wichita mother of 7 killed in crash

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A woman killed in a Wichita car crash earlier this month is remembered for the positive effect she had on others.

Loved ones say Marjorielle Evans was a breath of fresh air. They say the most challenging part of losing her is explaining to her seven children, all under the age of 15, that they will not see their mother again.

On Oct. 10, Majorielle was crossing Meridian near 47th Street South when she was struck and killed.

Her brother remembers the night vividly.

“Seeing my sister laying on that cold asphalt, just bleeding out, and then I seen her took her last breath, and that just took everything from me,” Treyvon Evans said.

The reality of her loss set in quickly.

“I was just waiting for my soul to get snatched out of my body because that was the last thing I wanted to hear,” he said.

Laquita Smith, a cousin, is now raising five of the seven children. She says no child should have to go through this.

“It’s been very hard,” she said. “Her kids are very young. Only two of them really understand what’s really going on. How do you explain that to the rest of them? I can’t really say that I’ve really grieved yet because I am trying to stay strong for the children.”

Mary Baker, Marjorielle’s aunt, hopes her niece’s story encourages others not to waste time and to always reach out to loved ones while they are still living.

“Love the ones we have here on Earth because you can only give a person their flowers while they’re here, and I try to give my kids their flowers every day,” she said.

The family said it has been difficult to plan a funeral and come up with the funds to bury Marjorielle. Her brother says they have tentatively scheduled her funeral service for 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at Heavenly Gates Mortuary, 615 W. Maple.
