After two disappointing seasons with the Denver Broncos after being traded to the Mile High City following a successful stint with the Seattle Seahawks, veteran quarterback Russell Wilson had the opportunity for a fresh start as a free agent.
With plenty of teams around the league in need of a quarterback of his caliber, Wilson was expected to draw interest and not be unemployed for long, as that turned out to be precisely what happened, with the Pittsburgh Steelers bringing him in to help the offense get back on track in the post-Ben Roethlisberger era.
Even though Wilson didn’t have to wait long for another ideal opportunity for a former Super Bowl-winning quarterback, the Steelers wanted to bring in some insurance at the quarterback position, resulting in the team trading for Justin Fields in a deal with the Chicago Bears, who were moving forward with rookie Caleb Williams.
Although all signs pointed to Wilson being the starter in Pittsburgh, a calf issue has kept him sidelined for the first three weeks of the season, and that injury may prevent him from being the starter when he returns, as Fields has proven his worth, leading the Steelers to three straight wins.
Sean Salisbury believes that sticking with Fields is the right way to go for the Steelers because Wilson’s best days as a quarterback in the NFL are behind him via The Dan Patrick Show.
“To me, Russell Wilson’s best football is behind him,” Salisbury said.

At this point, Fields doesn’t look like he’ll lose his starting job anytime soon if he can keep leading the Steelers to wins, even if these wins are more attributed to the play of the defense rather than the offense.
Fields needs to limit the mistakes while learning on the fly, and the Steelers might have a long-term option under center with a proven veteran backup.
