Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly asked German Prime Minister Olaf Scholz to send the Taurus missiles, which have a range of more than 500 kilometers.
– I have explained very clearly why I do not think it is right to send Taurus missiles, says Scholz on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro.
US President Joe Biden recently gave the thumbs up to the use of US weapons deep inside Russia. However, it is not something Scholz wants to do, for fear that Germany will be drawn in as a direct party to the war.
– We have a common understanding that the powerful weapons we have provided so far should not be used deep inside Russia, says Scholz.
Defense Minister Boris Pistorius says that the new drones Germany is now sending have a range of around 30 to 40 kilometres, and that they can knock out Russia’s drone air defence.
