A few days ago, Ukraine refused to accept a batch of 10 “Leopard 1A5” tanks from Germany, saying that they should be repaired first.
Ukrainians cannot repair them themselves because they do not have the necessary technicians and components.
“Spiegel” writes that Kiev informed the special headquarters of the German Ministry of Defense that the German tanks that arrived in Poland need repairs, and some of them require a major overhaul.
The German side sent a group of experts to Poland to check the tanks themselves.
Then it was discovered that the tanks “were already quite worn out after the training of Ukrainian soldiers in Germany and needed extensive repair”.
The German Ministry of Defense told “Spiegel” that it could not comment on “a specific individual incident” and added that the tanks were being repaired “together with Ukraine after intensive training in Germany.”
“Spiegel” also stated that the condition of the “Leopard 1A5” tanks, which Germany promised to deliver to Ukraine about a hundred, reflects planning problems in the logistics of German military aid.
The tanks stuck in Poland are the second tranche of a planned large-scale delivery of tanks. The Bundeswehr withdrew them from service more than 10 years ago, but since many of these tanks are still in storage, they were ordered to be repaired as soon as possible.
In early August, it was announced that Germany will deliver almost 30 additional Leopard 1 tanks to Ukraine after the arms concern “
Rheinmetall” bought from Belgium.
In addition, according to the media, Germany approached Greece with a proposal to supply Ukraine with 100 Greek “Leopard 1A5” which are still in service, in exchange for upgraded armored vehicles.
