– It has been a historic presidential term. Not because I have been president, but because of the work we and you have done, Biden said outside the White House on Thursday.
He added that he promised election winner Donald Trump that he will do everything to prepare the transfer of power.
– I will follow the constitution and fulfill my oath, and on 20 January we will have a peaceful transfer of power.
To the Democrats and their supporters, the president said:
– It is impossible to avoid setbacks. But giving up is unforgivable.
The speech also included a tribute to Vice President Kamala Harris, who took over as the Democratic presidential candidate at short notice this summer.
– She ran an inspiring election campaign, and everyone got to see her personality. She has backbone and a wonderful, genuine character, Biden said.
The president also emphasized that the American people deserve a peaceful and orderly transfer of power, and called for unity in the deeply divided country.
– You can’t be happy in your country only when you win. You cannot be happy with your neighbor only when you agree.
