TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Kansas Department of Transportation is conducting a comprehensive bus study survey.
The department is looking to enhance public transportation services across the state. KDOT wants public feedback on public transportation in Kansas, especially from those who use it.
“Public transportation plays a crucial role in connecting communities and allowing access to essential services across the state,” said KDOT Public Transportation Manager Rene Hart. “The feedback we receive will guide our efforts to create a more efficient, accessible and responsive transit system that meets the diverse needs of our communities.”
The study assesses current long-distance bus services by public transit agencies and private intercity carriers. Kansas currently supports three private bus carriers: Greyhound, Jefferson Lines and Village Travel.
The survey will be used specifically to:
- Examine and document the current connections between rural areas and the larger regional and national system of Intercity Bus (ICB) Service.
- Assess the unmet intercity bus needs of Kansas and identify investment opportunities for new ICB routes that are both feasible and viable to meet the identified needs
- Explore the feasibility of statewide coordination utilizing app technology
- Include a supplemental white paper on the economics of ICB and transit with a focus on aging in place
- Identify opportunities for integration and coordination with current and potential future passenger rail expansion as outlined in the Kansas State Rail Plan (Oct. 2022).
