Deliveries will stop from Saturday, says the Austrian energy company OMV. This is the message they have received from the Russian energy giant Gazprom.
While other European countries have stopped buying gas from Russia, Austria has until now still imported significant quantities of Russian gas via Ukraine. Hungary and Slovakia do the same.
Austrian Prime Minister Karl Nehammer assures that the gas stocks are full and that there are alternative suppliers.
– No one is going to freeze this winter. No homes will be cold, the Prime Minister promised on Friday.
He also assured that Austria’s Ukraine policy is firm.
– We do not allow ourselves to be blackmailed, and we do not want to be brought to our knees.
The background for the Russian gas cut is a disagreement between OMV and Gazprom. OMV prevailed in an arbitration court and announced that it would stop payments to Gazprom – which now responds by closing the gas tap.
