Lovely Portuguese – Dagsavisen

Bairrada is located in the north of Portugal near the Atlantic coast and only in 1980 did the district receive DOC status. Already in 1970, João Pato was one of the first in the district to bottle his own wine and sell it under his own name. Eventually his son Luis Pato took over the management of the winery and since then has done much to raise the status of both Bairrada and the baga grape, which is grown in the district. Baga is a grape that contains a lot of acid and tannin and needs some time to ripen. The best wines made from the grape become complex and are highly ageable. A number of Pato’s wines are on the pole, including Vinha Pan 2019 and Baga Touriga Nacional 2022. The latter is made from 60 percent baga and the rest touriga nacional and is a non-barrel-aged, juicy and wonderful wine for pizza and barbecue. Vinha Pan is made from 100 percent baga and a concentrated wine with lovely acidity that goes well with game, lamb and beef.

Among the wines of the week are also Seifried Nelson Riesling 2023 and Philippe le Hardi Bourgogne Côte Chalonnaise 2023 – two good white wine purchases that are part of the pole’s basic selection.
