On August 25, separatists in Mali announced the killing of at least 15 people, including children, in drone strikes on the town of Tinzawatine in the north of the country, near where the army suffered a major blow last month.

Mali had already carried out airstrikes on rebel targets in and around Tinzawatine shortly after Tuareg fighters killed a large number of Malian soldiers and Russian Wagner mercenaries near the town in July.

The fighting near Tinzaoutine in late July could be Wagner’s heaviest defeat since it intervened two years ago to help Mali’s military junta fight rebel groups.

The country has been embroiled in a conflict with jihadist rebels since Islamist groups took control of a Tuareg rebellion in 2012.

Frustration over the authorities’ failure to restore security has contributed to coups in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger since 2020.

In the aftermath, the military councils cut ties with their Western and regional allies, turning instead to Russia.

Meanwhile, the separatists signed a peace deal with the Malian government in 2015. But the GPC withdrew from the talks in 2022.
