(NEXSTAR) – It may be days until we have the final tally, but votes are pouring in from around the country in the 2024 presidential election. So far, polls have closed in more than a dozen states and millions of votes have been counted.
The race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump is expected to be a close one. On the morning of Election Day, national polls showed less than a 1% difference between the two candidates, according to a polling average by Decision Desk HQ in partnership with The Hill.
The polls were also incredibly close in seven key battleground states – Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. The results in those states are likely to determine the election’s outcome. As of 8 p.m. Eastern Time, polls had only closed in three of those states – and all were too close to call.

It remains to be seen how many people will turn out and vote this year – though early voting numbers were high. Leading into Tuesday, more than 82 million Americans had already cast their ballots.
In the 2020 presidential election, 66% of eligible voters cast a ballot. That’s the highest percentage in a national election since 1900, according to Pew Research.
