A long time has passed since interest in merging the PGA with the controversial LIV tour was first reported. But progress has been slow, partly due to the US Department of Justice. They have not wanted Saudi Arabia, which finances the LIV tour through the state investment fund PIF, to enter American golf.
McIlroy himself was initially strongly opposed to LIV’s entry into golf, but he has since withdrawn more. The Northern Irishman has recently stated that he wants a solution.
On Wednesday, several media reports that Trump wins the election and becomes the 47th president of the United States. McIlroy believes that this can bring something good for golf. Trump is known as a very keen golfer, and he owns several luxury courses under the name “Trump National”.
McIlroy also points to one of Trump’s biggest supporters during the election campaign, Elon Musk.
– He might be able to solve it. He has Elon Musk, who I think is the smartest person in the world, next to him. We might be able to get something done if Musk gets involved as well, McIlroy said at a press conference on Wednesday.
– Trump has a very good relationship with Saudi Arabia, and he loves golf. Who knows? said the Northern Irishman.
This week he will play the European Tour tournament in Abu Dhabi. Viktor Hovland, who will probably not play any more tournaments in 2024 as a result of an injury, will not be there.
