Menendez brothers resentencing decision expected this week

Menendez brothers resentencing decision expected this week

A decision on resentencing the Menendez brothers is expected by the end of this week, according to reports.

In an unrelated press conference on Tuesday, District Attorney George Gascón explained that he plans to have a decision on the possible resentencing of convicted murderers Erik and Lyle Menendez by Friday.

“As I said 10 days ago, I would make a decision within 10 days or so. I plan to make the decision by the end of this week,” Gascón said, as reported by ABC News, which added that he “concluded by saying, with some finality: ‘Yes, the end of this week.'”

The Menendez brothers were convicted of killing their parents in Beverly Hills more than three decades ago, though recent television series and documentaries have pointed out that the boys’ father was possibly sexually abusive, providing a powerful mitigating factor that wasn’t considered in trial.

Recently, the boys’ family came forward to ask that they be released from prison, and Gascón has previously said that “there is a possibility being alleged by his lawyers, not by us, that there was evidence that, had it been presented to the jury, the outcome of the trial would have been different.”

Simultaneously, Gascón is in a tough reelection fight against challenger Nathan Hochman, who is leading by a wide margin in polls.

“It’s not even close … This now appears to be Hochman’s race to lose. He’s way ahead,” Mark DiCamillo, director of the poll, told the Los Angeles Times earlier this month.
