Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel is firmly rejecting the notion that his offensive system can be effectively run by any quarterback.

The assertion comes in the wake of Tua Tagovailoa’s recent concussion, which has sparked discussion about the team’s quarterback options.

McDaniel recently addressed this narrative with a mix of frustration and subtle humor.

“I kind of get triggered, kind of understand. To say anybody could, then we would have open tryouts and that would be very salary cap friendly,” McDaniel said, via FinsXtra.

He pinpointed that quarterback productivity within the system doesn’t equate to universal compatibility.

McDaniel staunchly defended Tagovailoa’s unique contributions to the offense, asserting that it’s the quarterback’s specific playing style that maximizes the system’s potential.

It just shows the coach’s belief in Tagovailoa’s integral role in the team’s offensive success.

With Tagovailoa on injured reserve and sidelined for at least the next four games, Skylar Thompson is poised to step into the starting role.

McDaniel expressed confidence in Thompson’s abilities, highlighting his diligent work behind the scenes over the past three years.

The coach’s faith in Thompson stems from the quarterback’s familiarity with the system and his previous game experience, including a playoff appearance against the Buffalo Bills.

However, Thompson’s limited regular-season playing time presents a challenge as he steps into a more prominent role.

McDaniel ended his remarks by drawing on his own extensive experience coaching the system.

“I would say from my point, being in the offense for 20 years, that the statement that anybody can run it is false, but what do I know,” he said.

As the Dolphins navigate this quarterback transition, all eyes will be on Thompson to see if he can maintain the high standards set by Tagovailoa.
