Mother and daughter battling cancer cheer on Dodgers from hospital

The Dodgers’ World Series success so far has lifted spirits across Los Angeles, but perhaps none more than for a mother and daughter duo who are both battling cancer.

One month after her mother, Genny Duran, was diagnosed with breast cancer, Cassidy Duran was diagnosed with a rare brain cancer called Medulloblastoma in July 2023.

Both women have received surgeries, radiation and chemotherapy in addition to other treatments respective to their different cancers, often with no end in sight.

However, an extra boost of motivation was found through their favorite baseball team’s recent and exciting success in the World Series.

On Friday and Saturday nights, the Duran women watched the Dodgers defeat the Yankees from Cassidy’s hospital room.

“It gives us something to look forward to,” Genny told KTLA’s Rachel Menitoff.

The family said they were ecstatic when Freddie Freeman hit his walk-off grand slam.

“You’re watching this and you’re not even thinking about the pain or the medical side of everything, you’re just watching and cheering,” said Cassidy, whose dream is to attend a World Series game.

Their family continues to praise the duo’s resilience, sharing that they’ve been in and out of the hospital with no more than a few days between admissions.

A GoFundMe created by a family member explains that “Regardless of their constant pain, they have always put on a brave face and smile every day.”
