(Milan – Newcastle 0-0) Newcastle played their first Champions League game in 20 years, but had a tough time against Milan.
Nevertheless, Newcastle did not go home empty-handed from Milan.
Because despite several great Milan chances and pressure, the visitors managed to keep a clean sheet and take one point with them in the first game of the season Champions League-match.
– If Newcastle manage a draw here, it will be a fantastic result, former footballer Paul Merson said on Sky Sports during the match.
Newcastle had a great opportunity to take all three points in extra time of the match, but Sean Longstaff’s shot went over the target.
Milan was by far the best and most creative team in the match. Newcastle last chance Nick Pope got a lot to do.
Both Olivier Giroud, Théo Hernandez and Rafael Leão each had a great opportunity. The latter had a cheeky push into the visitors’ 16-metre area, but stumbled shortly afterwards midway through the first half.
There was no dream return for Sandro Tonali either. Tonali was brought to Newcastle from Milan in the summer, but did not make it work against old teammates.
– Tonali struggles against his old club, wrote Sky Sports in the second half.
Shortly afterwards, he was substituted to applause from several Milan fans.
Milan lost 1-5 in the Milan derby against Inter recently. See the goals here:
This was Newcastle’s first Champions League game since their exit from the group stage in the 2002/03 season.
Newcastle captured fourth place in the Premier League last year and was thus guaranteed a place in this year’s edition of the world’s most prestigious club football tournament.
The point from the match could prove to be important for Newcastle. For group F, in which the teams play, is referred to as the toughest. Dortmund and PSG are also in the group.
