It is The village post office which confirms the death of the former football top and politician of the family.
Flattum died at Ringerike Hospital on Monday.
– Odd has been ill for a while. He was admitted to Ringerike a few days ago. It looked like it was going to go well, but then he died this morning, says stepdaughter Ida Angeltveit to Bygdeposten.
She describes the late sports figure as generous, wise and kind.
Football president Lise Klaveness remembers Flattum in the same way.
– One of our wisest and most generous football leaders has passed away. Odd Flattum was a person involved in sports and society for whom Norwegian football has a lot to thank, she tells NTB.
– He was passionate about creating good local communities throughout the country – not least through social communities in football and sport. We send our warmest thoughts to Odd’s immediate family in gratitude, adds Klaveness.
The Drillo success
Flattum was a board member of the Norwegian Football Association from 1976. In the periods 1980–1985 and 1987–1992 he was vice-president, before becoming president from 1992 to 1996.
In the latter period, both the Norwegian men’s national team and the women’s national team had great success. Egil Drillo Olsen led Norway to the World Cup finals in the USA in 1994. The following year, the women’s national team became world champions in Sweden.
In 1996, Flattum was replaced as football president by Per Ravn Omdal.
Flattum also had international assignments for a number of years for the European Football Association (Uefa), and he was chairman of the board of Ullevaal Stadium A/S after the end of his presidency of the NFF.
From 1996 to 2003, he was vice-president of the Norwegian Sports Confederation.
Received honours
Flattum has been awarded the football association’s high-hanging gold badge and is an honorary member of the sports association. He shares the latter honor with only 24 others.
He has also been central to the ski flying slopes in Vikersund, including for 20 years as a permanent speaker in international races.
Flattum was born and raised at Modum. Alongside his many positions in sport, he was politically active in the Labor Party from 1971 and mayor of his home municipality in the period 1991 to 2007.
As a footballer, he was active in the clubs Geithus, Urædd and Vikersund.
