Disney+ is delivering an early Christmas gift to Demigods. Percy Jackson and the Olympians, the long-awaited live-action series based on the highly acclaimed fantasy saga created by Rick Riordan, is coming to the streaming service on December 20 and celebrates it with the first official teaser trailer.
First announced in 2020, the upcoming tv show has been in development for a long time now, with author Riordan accompanying the House of Mouse in every step of the way to make sure they make a faithful adaptation of his source material, especially after what happened with the first attempt of taking Percy and his adventures to the live-action format in 2010.
Although the movies were reasonable box office successes, the critics and most of the fans were really hard on them, especially because they took many creative liberties and didn’t exactly respect the books. Since the series was announced, the fans’ faith was restored, and an earlier teaser has definitely proved them right, leaving everyone anticipating an epic journey and an amazing visual display. Now, the official Percy Jackson channel on Twitter has released an official trailer:
The video mostly focuses on introducing the main characters played by Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jeffries and Aryan Simhadri, and it also features some of the monsters Percy and his friends will be facing in their fantastic journey.
The series also stars Lin-Manuel Miranda, Megan Mullally, Toby Stephens, the late Lance Reddick, Jason Mantzoukas, Jay Duplass, Charlie Bushnell, Dior Goodjohn, Jessica Parker Kennedy, Olivea Morton, Suzanne Cryer, Timm Sharp and Timothy Omundson.
What’s Percy Jackson About?
The books follow the story of the titular character, a young boy who struggles at school and has always felt out of place. What he doesn’t know is there’s a good reason for this. Percy is, in fact, the son of Poseidon, the God of the sea, making him a Demigod.
When he finds out the truth about his identity, Percy has to attend Half-Blood Camp, a training facility where kids like him are taught to use their skills and prepared for the battles they’ll have to face in the distant future, or maybe not so distant. In the first book, titled The Lightning Thief, Percy will have to ally with his friend Grover and Annabeth, the daughter of Athena, in order to find Zeus’ stolen lightning to restore peace among the Gods.
Riordan wrote a total of six books for the main story and five other books that work as a supplement. The saga has become one of the most acclaimed within the world of YA fantasy, being compared to some other major literary hits like Lord of the Rings by J.R.R Tolkien, The Narnia Chronicles by C.S. Lewis, or Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling. You can catch the new Percy Jackson series on Dec. 20.
