A Pokemon fan has shared their redesigns of Gastly and its evolutions Haunter and Gengar. The altered take on these iconic Gen 1 pocket monsters has drawn attention from fans of the Pokemon series.

While perhaps not quite as well-known as Pikachu, the Gastly family tree of Pokemon has been popular since the start. Haunter and Gengar, in particular, seem to have a lot of fans, due not only to their capabilities in battle, but because of their appearance and behavior. The spooky-but-jovial trio of Pokemon made an impression in the original anime and in the games, and they’ve remained fan-favorites ever since.

Now, Pokemon fan and artist necrovvi has shared their reimaginings of Gastly, Haunter, and Gengar. In necrovvi’s version, Gastly is now a single-eyed Pokemon that bears a resemblance to Final Fantasy‘s Ahriman. Unlike the original Gastly, this one has a more pronounced physical form, with hands, feet, a tail, and the spiky ears that Gengar has. Haunter has become much more like the Gengar fans know and love. It stands upright on two feet, and has a long, curling tongue, with a sharp end. Finally, Gengar has switched to standing on four legs, has very pronounced claws, and almost appears cat-like in the pouncing-style pose the artist depicted it in.

Pokemon Fans Share Their Thoughts on Gastly Overhauls

Many Pokemon fans have shared praise with the artist for their re-imaginings. One of the top comments wishes that these versions of the Gastly line could be added to Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, while another said that they were reminded of the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland. Several said that they particularly liked the green shiny family that necrovvi showcased, with one joking that the Shiny Gastly looks a bit like Mike Wazowski from the Pixar Monsters, Inc. movies. Some felt that it was a little too difficult to tell the difference between Haunter and Gengar in this version, but the general response was positive across the board.

This is far from the first time that a fan has given Gastly’s evolutionary line some kind of overhaul. Players have given Gengar new evolutions and even regional variants, but it’s not just fans that have given Gastly and company attention over the years. Pokemon has introduced new versions for its final form, giving Gengar a Mega Evolution and Gigantamax form, keeping the Pokemon line fresh. While it remains to be seen if the Gastly line keeps getting attention in future games from developers, fans will likely keep coming up with new ideas regardless.
