Queen portraits by Andy Warhol stolen in the Netherlands – Dagsavisen

– The entrance was blown in and there was glass everywhere, broadcaster NOS reports about the art theft in the town of Oisterwijk in North Brabant near the border with Belgium on Thursday evening.

The thieves made off with the two queen portraits from Warhol’s “Reigning Queens” series from 1985, two years before the pop artist’s death. Two other portraits from the same series – of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and Queen Nftombi from Eswatini – were left in the street, probably because there was no room in the getaway car, reports NOS.

According to the plan, the pictures were to be put up for sale at an art fair in Amsterdam at the end of the month.

– The pictures are worth a good deal of money, says gallery owner Mark Peet Visser to the regional broadcaster Omroep Brabant. He tells AFP that the photos were not unique, but probably exist in tens of copies.

– That makes them a little easier to sell than unique works, but not much easier, he says.
