After hiring JJ Redick as their new head coach and drafting Bronny James with one of their two picks in the 2024 NBA Draft, the Los Angeles Lakers have received a lot of criticism for being unable to upgrade the roster, and the team looks like a rudderless ship at this point with a bleak future on the horizon.

Despite failing to make any substantial additions to the roster and being closer to rebuilding rather than contending in the Western Conference, the Lakers are still a hot topic of discussion, with some believing they are still a threat with superstar Anthony Davis and LeBron James leading the way.

However, some within the media, former player Richard Jefferson in this case, think the Lakers are far from a legitimate threat in the NBA heading into the 2024-25 season.

Jefferson believes that all that has to be done is to compare the Lakers to their arch-rivals and reigning NBA champion Boston Celtics when realizing how far they are from being title contenders via NBA on ESPN.

“You look at the defending champions, the Boston Celtics. The Lakers are three all-star caliber players away from being on their level,” Jefferson said.

Jefferson has a point, as this isn’t much of a comparison.

The Lakers are currently a team with two big-name players on the roster and not much behind them, as well as a head coach who has no experience coaching on any level.

Although there’s always a chance that the Lakers can defy the odds and make everyone eat their words, logic suggests it could be a rough season in the twilight of LeBron James’ career in Los Angeles.
