Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is the next game from Amy Hennig, the famed writer and director behind the Uncharted and Legacy of Kain series. The title, which is being developed by the recently-opened studio Skydance New Media, is a narrative-driven action-adventure game that features the likes of Captain America and Black Panther as playable protagonists, both of whom have to work together to prevent the rise of the infamous terrorist organization named Hydra. Despite its seemingly typical set-up, Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra isn’t just any ordinary superhero game. The upcoming title does, after all, take place in Nazi-occupied Paris during the height of World War 2. This is a rather unique setting for not just a superhero game, but an AAA title as well.
Although not much has been revealed about Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra other than some basic details about its premise, the game is surprisingly close to release. Currently, the highly-anticipated Marvel title is scheduled to come out sometime in 2025, with Embracer Group subsidiary Plaion set to serve as its publisher. Based on this vague launch window, it seems Marvel 1943 : Rise of Hydra isn’t going to face much stiff competition when it comes out next year. While 2025 is going to be fairly stacked for gaming in general, the next 12 to 15 months seem to be fairly light for superhero titles and Marvel games in particular. This has the potential to be great for Marvel 1943 in the long run, because it indicates that Skydance New Media’s next game could have a lot of room to breathe by beating other upcoming Marvel titles to the punch when it releases next year.
Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra May Not Face Much Competition from Other Marvel Games in 2025
Insomniac’s Unannounced Venom Game is Reportedly Slated for 2025, But it May Not Launch Next Year
There are various upcoming Marvel projects in the works, but one of the more intriguing ones is a game that hasn’t even been announced yet: Venom: Lethal Protector. According to the Insomniac leaks from 2023, this title is supposed to be the next big release from Insomniac Games. From what little information has been uncovered about it so far, it appears that this game is a Venom-focused spin-off of the Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise that intends to bridge the narrative gap between Spider-Man 2 and 3. The title is also reportedly going to be similar in scope to Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
Venom: Lethal Protector is apparently slated for release in 2025, whereas Insomniac’s other upcoming superhero title, Marvel’s Wolverine, is planned to launch in 2026. However, 2024 is almost over and, given the fact that Sony has yet to announce or tease anything along the lines of a Venom spin-off game, these release windows may already be outdated. If Venom: Lethal Protector still exists, then it seems likely that it won’t come out next year, unless Sony surprises fans by announcing the title during the rumored State of Play this month.
EA’s Iron Man and Black Panther Games Are Still Shrouded in Mystery and Are Unlikely to Release Soon
In addition to Insomniac’s Marvel projects, there are also EA’s upcoming Iron Man and Black Panther games to look forward to. Even though both of these titles have formally been announced, unlike Venom: Lethal Protector, there is next-to-no information available about either of the two games. At the moment, one of the few things that fans officially know about the Black Panther and Iron Man titles is that the former is being developed by EA Motive, while the latter is being helmed by Cliffhanger Games. Since EA has yet to divulge any significant information about these superhero games, it seems safe to assume that they won’t be released in 2025.
Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra May Avoid a Saturated Release Window By Launching in 2025
Taking all this information into account, it looks like Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra could legitimately be the only single-player AAA Marvel game set to come out next year. While this would probably disappoint some superhero enthusiasts, it could prevent Skydance’s new game from launching in a saturated release window. It’s entirely possible that Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra gets delayed to 2026, of course, but unless that happens, the title will likely have 2025 all to itself, at least in the realm of Marvel games.
