The AFP news agency has arrived at the number using reports in state-run Saudi media. In both 2022 and 2023, it was reported that 34 foreigners had been executed. This year, the number has already reached 101.
Such a sharp increase has never been recorded before, according to the human rights organization European-Saudi Organization for Human Rights (ESOHR), which is based in Berlin.
– Saudi Arabia has never before executed 100 foreigners in a year, says Taha al-Hajji, one of the leaders of the group.
Altogether, the country has executed 274 people this year, according to AFP’s overview. You have to go back 30 years to find an equally high number.
Among the foreigners who were executed, 21 came from Pakistan, 20 from Yemen, 14 from Syria, ten from Nigeria, nine from Egypt, eight from Jordan and seven from Ethiopia.
People from Sudan, India, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Eritrea and the Philippines are also represented in the grim statistics.
One reason for the sharp increase is that in 2022, Saudi Arabia lifted a three-year moratorium (temporary setting) on the execution of people who had been sentenced to death for violating the country’s strict drug laws.
