Florida police arrest suspect after shooting near Trump headquarters

Martin County Police in Florida say they have arrested a suspect in a shooting outside the resort of Republican presidential candidate and former President Donald Trump. Donald Trumpwho was inside the resort at the time.

CNN quoted the county sheriff as saying that the suspect, whom Palm Beach County police were searching for, had been arrested.

Reuters reported that two informed sources said that Trump was fine after gunshots were fired from outside the fence of his golf course in Palm Beach, Florida.

Donald transferred Trump Junior, law enforcement authorities said they found an AK-47 assault rifle and a suspect was in custody.

The New York Post reported that “two people were exchanging fire with each other outside the golf club and the Republican candidate was never in danger.”

The Associated Press, citing law enforcement sources, said the Secret Service opened fire on a suspected gunman while he was at his golf course in Florida.

The White House said in a statement that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris had been briefed on the incident and were “relieved to learn he is safe. They will be updated regularly.”

Meanwhile, Harris, Trump’s competitor in the November 5 election, posted a tweet on Twitter expressing her happiness that the former president is well and saying that “violence has no place in America.”

Trump was shot in the ear in an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on July 13, just months before a presidential election that is likely to be a close contest between him and Harris.

It was the first shooting of a U.S. president or major party presidential candidate in more than four decades, and represented a glaring security lapse that forced Kimberly Shettle to resign as Secret Service director under pressure from members of Congress from both parties.

The former US president was shot in the right ear in the Pennsylvania incident and one person was killed. The Secret Service shot and killed the shooter, a 20-year-old man named Thomas Cross.

The Washington Post reported Saturday that the Secret Service investigation confirmed security lapses that paved the way for the assassination attempt in Pennsylvania, and revealed new information, including that agents did not direct local police to secure the roof of the building used by the gunman, according to senior government officials familiar with the investigation.
